When we last left off, I was waiting for BMW to approve my travel dates so that I could get the ball rolling on everything. Well last week, my client advisor called to notify me that BMW approved my pickup date, and that we could get started on everything. He sent me a finalized build sheet, which I confirmed, and then we arranged an appointment to complete the European purchase order. The European Purchase order consists of six pages of signatures, saying that I will buy the car no matter what, and BMW is not responsible for if something changes schedule wise on their end. Along with the signatures, BMW also requires a copy of your passport, so they know that you are actually the one going to take delivery of the car. This is important, because otherwise customers here could arrange to have anyone in Europe “take delivery”, just so that they could benefit from the savings. As of right now, I’m just waiting for BMW to assign me a build date and VIN. Once that has happened, I can arrange a time to complete the purchase paperwork. The plan is to complete the purchase paperwork as late as possible, because I have to turn in my trade at that time, and will be car-less thereafter. Lastly, in a recent development, my friend who was supposed to be accompanying me on the trip has bailed. So it looks like I'll be traveling solo, which should definitely make for an interesting experience.

Meet up with some of the Oppos in the area in order to replace your friend?

That definitely could be a plan. I know I saw a post (from E.julius?) that he had met up with an Opponaut in Germany.

You mention you’ve now confirmed the dates with BMW.
I’m curious how much work it is for you to arrange shipping the car to the US after your trip. Do you just give BMW a time and place when you will turn the keys back over to them for shipping? And then won’t you be car-less for a few weeks post-trip?

There’s about fifteen drop off locations throughout Europe where you can leave the car. All you have to do is let them know in advance which one you intend to leave the car at, and drop it off with the keys at whatever time you designate. BMW incorporates all shipping and transportation costs into the vehicle price, just as they do when you buy a car from a US dealer. The catch is, no matter which drop off point you leave it at, it must be sent back to Munich in order to get shipped to the US. So if you drop the car off in Amsterdam for example, they have to put it on a truck to Munich, before it can be shipped stateside. This can tack on a few extra days, or even a week, onto the time it takes for the car to arrive back in the US. I’ll be staying in Munich my whole time there, so I wont have to worry about any extra return time. There are about six weeks between the time you drop the car off in Munich, and when it arrives here. So yes, during that time I will be car-less. My Dad has generously offered to let me borrow his Jeep during that period of time though, as he’ll be driving his Miata.

Yep, sure did! Can’t hurt to make a post about it and see if any of the europpos respond. If I was still going to be in Europe at that time I would offer to meet you myself, but I’m returning to the US in a couple weeks. That being said, I have done a lot of solo travel since being here, and it’s really not so bad. Get to do whatever you want, whenever you want since you don’t have to compromise with other people in your group. I would have loved to have spent more time at the BMW museum in Munich, but the friend I was with was only moderately interested so I didn’t want to put him through that.

I think it would be awesome to hear about your trip. And I definitely agree with your opinion about traveling alone, it really allows you to experience the trip in a different way.

Woah, I don’t know how I missed that. Okay just one question, where should I go to drive after taking delivery? My trip is going to be a short one, and I want to spend the rest of the day after I take delivery driving. Right now I’m either considering driving to the neuschwanstein castle, or driving to kesselberg (supposed to be some of the best driving near munich). Do you have any opinion on either? I haven’t heard anything about the drive to neuschwanstein being so spectacular, but everyone seems to think its worthwhile to go there. So the decision is whether or not to forego seeing the castle, for what is (probably) a better driving road.
